Ron Hill Accrington 10K
World famous Accrington runner Ron Hill will lead hundreds onto Hyndburn’s roads as he puts his name to a brand new 10K event in the borough. This event also celebrates the 40th anniversary of Hyndburn Borough Council.
Ron Hill MBE - world record holder, Olympian, clothing entrepreneur and Freeman of the Borough - is encouraging Hyndburn residents to shape up for 2014 by signing up to the Ron Hill Accrington 10K run set to take place on Sunday, 30 March.
Setting off from Accrington Town Hall at 10.30am, the event will see runners venture up Manchester Road to Baxenden before looping back down the tree-lined, former railway track ‘greenway’, finishing back in the town centre.
The Ron Hill Accrington 10K is open to anyone over the age of 18 with prizes available for the first three runners home in the categories of male, female and veterans. It costs £8 for affiliated running club members to register, £10 for unaffiliated members or £12 on the day.
Charities and good causes locally set to benefit from the event include Finley’s Disney Dream, East Lancashire Hospice and Derian House Children’s Hospice.

Fruitshare and Crowdfunder
We have recently applied to be part of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s FruitShare project, which aims to get sustainable fruit production into Schools around the country. Unfortunately we missed out on the small number of free trees on offer, but have been given the chance to purchase 10 fruit trees through CrowdFunder. We have 28 days to raise a minimum of £130.00 to pay for our trees.
Our aim is to develop a small fruit orchard with the help of our Horticulture group, which will provide sustainable fruit production for the College over the coming years.
We are working hard with the Marketing and Business Development teams to generate support for the project, and would appreciate support from staff and students to raise awareness and generate pledges for the trees. We only need 26 pledges of £5.00 to reach our target and secure our trees!

‘Fetch’ - Discovery Style Solution
Library+ is delighted to introduce a new Discovery style solution for learners called ‘Fetch’.
‘Fetch’ is a user friendly, fast response, single search experience that has the capacity to trawl our collection of print and electronic resources and return users with a single list of results.
‘Fetch’ may be found located on the front page of the New Virtual Library, together with a range of guides to help navigate the system.
If you would like a demonstration of the resource or arrange some individual training, please see a member of Library+ staff.
The Creative Club at ACCROSS!
This club is available to all students and is on Wednesdays from 12:15 - 1:00pm in room G001.
It is a chance to just draw, colour, paint, make jewellery and cards, write or even learn or listen to music. It's a great opportunity to meet new people and relax in a creative atmosphere. You don't have to be a expert; all you have to do is give it a go and you may find hidden skills that you didn't even know you had.
If anyone has a special interest or talent, we will try to put on some sessions or just come and try whatever's on offer.
If you are interested, please contact Dianne Byrne or Derek Cooper in E107.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards
What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh programme is a real adventure from beginning to end. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from - you just need to be between the ages of 14 - 24 and realise there’s more to life than sitting on the sofa and watching life pass you by.
What does the Duke of Edinburgh Award involve?
You achieve your award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections, these are: Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition.
If you’re going for Gold there’s also a residential activity.
You could find yourself helping people in the community, getting fitter and developing new skills, whilst meeting new people and having an amazing time!
What will I get out of doing a Duke of Edinburgh Award?
You’ll get the chance to enjoy loads of new experiences, discover talents you never knew you had and really challenge yourself. You’ll get to spend time doing the things you really love and get recognition for doing them, and have the opportunity to make a difference to other people’s lives in your community.
Achieving your award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from Colleges and Universities to employers. Doing DofE really does give you the skills for life and work!
What do I do if I want to get involved?
If you would like to start your Duke of Edinburgh Award, you can speak to your LDM, or a member of the Enrichment Team, based in the Hub, or the Student Union Office. Alternatively, you can email the enrichment team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
